Ellis’s comments on the close connection between male sexuality, power and violence are extremely revealing. At certain points the distinction between the sexual impulse and the impulse to exert force almost disappears:

The infliction of pain must inevitably be a frequent indirect result of the exertion of power (i.e. in courtship). It is even more than this; the infliction of pain by the male on the female may itself be a gratification of the impulse to exert force (ibid., p. 67).
